Our History

Strandhotel Klitrosen – Where Tradition Meets Today

The story of Klitrosen begins in 1916, when the closeness of the sea, simplicity, and tranquility were part of everyday life. Back then, meals were shaped by what nature provided, with summer’s harvest carefully preserved for the colder months.

We still hold on to that philosophy: true flavor arises when you make use of what grows just outside your door. That local foundation remains at the heart of our kitchen.

At Klitrosen, we build on this heritage – but interpret it in a modern way. Here, timeless principles meet fresh ideas, allowing you to enjoy meals and experiences where presence, quality, and the rhythm of nature come together.

Badepension Klitrosen

1916

In 1916, Karoline (Line) Kjeldgaard Pedersen (1890–1969) and Marinus Pedersen (1889–1967) laid the foundation for Badepension Klitrosen when they married. From the very beginning, it was a true family venture. Karoline’s brother, Peder, had already built the original house back in 1905, a modest building with a single dormer window. Locals affectionately referred to it as “The Poorhouse.” When it was transformed into a seaside guesthouse, the building was expanded with another dormer and fitted with eight beds. Out of these humble beginnings, Klitrosen grew into a warm and welcoming family-run retreat by the sea.

A family venture

1964

In 1964, the hotel was passed on to Kirsten and Carl Henrik Christensen, who had previously managed Løkken Badehotel. They added a modern touch to the property by constructing a new motel wing, giving guests the convenience of parking directly in front of their room door.

Through each generation, Strandhotel Klitrosen has remained a place where tradition meets renewal – a welcoming home by the sea, shaped by the people who carried it forward.

Klitrosen – A Venue for Celebrations and Conferences

1980

In 1980, their son and daughter-in-law, Erna and Niels Chr. Christensen, took over Klitrosen.
They transformed the hotel into a venue for both celebrations and conferences, meeting the growing demand for modern facilities. The kitchen was modernized, and in 1989, a large banquet hall and new reception area were added. Erna and Niels Chr. ran the hotel with dedication until the end of 2002.

Turbulent Times

2002

After Erna and Niels’ era at Klitrosen, the hotel entered a period of change with several new owners taking over for shorter periods (Per Sand 2002–2007, Gert Hauge 2005–2007, and Kim Madsen 2005–2022).

During this time, Per Sand renovated the “Pancake House,” transforming it into a small Bed & Breakfast that was rented out to guests.

New Times at the Old Hotel Klitrosen

2011

In 2011, Rikke Ejsenhardt Muus and Mads Muus took over the management of Hotel Klitrosen. They continued to run the hotel as a holiday and event hotel, while also wishing to develop the property with holiday homes.

In 2012, the first six holiday homes were completed across from the hotel, which have since been sold to private owners.

100-Year Anniversary

2016

On September 26, 2016, Klitrosen celebrated its 100-year anniversary. Unfortunately, it was also the day of the tragic fire at the original Svinkløv Badehotel, our “neighbors” by the coast.

Despite this tragic event, Rikke and Mads chose to mark the anniversary with a reception in the Grand Hall, joined by guests who were well-acquainted with Klitrosen’s long history.

“We are both honored and humbled, and we hope that Klitrosen will still be here 100 years from now,” said Rikke Ejsenhardt Muus in her welcome speech.

Klitrosen’s New Chapter

2017

In 2017, Hotel Klitrosen entered a new chapter when it was leased to Helle Petersen, a former employee under Rikke Ejsenhardt Muus and now the owner of Rønnes Hotel. The vision was to revive the hotel’s former glory as a premier destination for events and conferences.

By 2021, the then-owner, Kim Madsen, made the decision to sell Hotel Klitrosen, opening the door for the next chapter in its history.

Welcome to the New Strandhotel klitrosen

2022

In March 2022, Villy Jæger and Carmilla Tegen became the proud new owners of Klitrosen.

The hotel’s main building has been beautifully renovated in bright, Nordic-inspired tones, capturing the essence of a modern seaside retreat.

During the winter of 2023, half of the rooms were redesigned with natural materials and calming colors, bringing the outdoors inside and creating a serene space for rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation.
